First, Desperate Dogs Organization (D.D.O.) wishes everyone a happy & safe holiday. Are you ready for our tips?

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR PETS CALM AND SAFE FOR THIS HOLIDAY:

Pets (especially dogs) are naturally afraid of loud noises such as fireworks. So it is critically important to:

  • NOT set Fireworks off around your pets. Not only is it frightening, but it is dangerous and can cause serious injury or result in your pet running away and either getting very hurt, lost, or ending up in a pound or shelter.
  • Keep all pets indoors when Fireworks are shot off. Even if you yourself are not setting off the fireworks, it is still very important to keep all pets indoors. Again, it can cause lots of stress, and/or force your pet to try and run away/escape. You may want to keep your pet safely in a crate when Fireworks are set off if they show lots of signs of stress.
  • Keep pets entertained or distracted during Fireworks. Try keeping your pet in a room with a radio or TV and turn it up a bit to help drown out the noise. Give your pet a favorite treat like a bone or toy (make sure all toys/treats are pet-friendly of course). Kongs filled with peanut butter (frozen even) make great distraction treats and even mind-puzzles for your pet. If your dog has allergies to or can't eat peanut butter, try leaving treats in the holes of the kong toy.
  • Collars and I.D. Tags are Key! If your pet becomes lost or runs away, they can easily be returned to you nice and safe.
  • Create a "Safe Spot" (Optional); All pets deserve a safe place to hide, just like we do. Create a special spot with blankets, towels, toys, water, etc., to make sure your pet stays distracted and safe, physically and mentally. Again, it is recommended to use a radio or TV to drown out some of the noise.
  • Keep your eye out for any injured or lost pets, and educate your friends! Forward these tips to your friends who own pets so everyone can stay safe! Also, keep your eye out for any injured or lost pets, if you do, see what you can do.

Stay Safe this Holiday!
